Empires is a catalog of states and civilizations that ended — capitals stormed, dynasties extinguished, multinational realms dissolved by war or revolution — each autopsied from the height of power to the cause of collapse, with the peoples conquered or dispersed kept in view, and triumphalist framings corrected.
